How to Measure for a Bed Frame: Size Chart, Height and Room Space

Short answer: a bed frame is sized to match its mattress, so start with your mattress size (queen, king and so on). Then measure three more things: the floor space the frame will take up with about 24 inches of walking room around it, the height you want the top of the mattress to sit at, and the doorways and stairs the frame has to pass through on the way in.
Bed frame size chart
The Sleep Foundation notes that bed frames use the same size names as mattresses and that frame sizes typically match the mattress dimensions, give or take an inch or two. These are the standard mattress dimensions a frame is built to hold:
| Size | Mattress (width × length) | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38″ × 75″ | Kids, teens, one adult, small rooms |
| Twin XL | 38″ × 80″ | One taller sleeper; 5″ longer than a twin |
| Full (double) | 54″ × 75″ | One adult who wants more width; a tight fit for two |
| Queen | 60″ × 80″ | Most couples; fits most bedrooms |
| King | 76″ × 80″ | Couples who want the most width; needs a larger room |
| California king | 72″ × 84″ | Tall sleepers; 4″ longer but 4″ narrower than a king |

Step 1: Measure the floor space (the frame is bigger than the mattress)
The mattress dimensions above are the sleeping surface. The frame’s outside footprint is usually larger: side rails, legs, a headboard and especially a footboard or a sleigh-style curve all add inches. Before you buy:
- Find the listing’s overall dimensions (often called assembled or exterior dimensions) and use those, not the mattress size, for your floor plan.
- Add walking room. The Sleep Foundation recommends leaving about 24 inches of space around each side of the bed so the room does not feel cramped.
- Mark it on the floor with painter’s tape or a few sheets of newspaper. The Sleep Foundation suggests laying out the approximate size of a new bed before you buy to see how it fits.
- Check what the frame has to clear: closet and wardrobe doors, drawers on nightstands and dressers, radiators, outlets you need to reach, and windows.

Step 2: Decide on the height
The Sleep Foundation puts a typical bed frame at knee height, about 12 to 16 inches tall. Combined with a standard mattress of 10 to 15 inches, that height lets most adults sit on the edge of the bed with their feet flat on the floor and knees bent, which also makes it easier to get in and out of bed.
- Add it up: frame height + any foundation or box spring + mattress thickness = the height of your sleep surface. Measure the height of a chair or bed you find comfortable to sit on and aim for something close.
- Taller frames leave room for under-bed storage.
- Low and floor-level frames look modern, but the Sleep Foundation notes that frames that are too high or too low may not suit older sleepers or people with mobility issues.
- Toddler and kids’ frames sit much lower and may have guard rails.

Step 3: Measure the way in
A frame that fits the bedroom still has to get there. Measure the width and height of every doorway, hallway turn and stairwell between the front door and the bedroom, and compare them with the size of the largest boxed or assembled piece on the listing, usually the headboard or a one-piece platform. Frames that arrive flat-packed with separate rails are easier to carry in than one-piece designs.
Which type of frame?
| Type | What it is | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | Built-in slatted or solid platform | No separate foundation needed; may or may not have a headboard |
| Panel | Headboard, footboard and two side panels, often wood | Very sturdy; usually used with a box spring or foundation |
| Storage | Drawers or a lift-up base under the mattress | Good when closet space is short |
| Sleigh | Curved headboard and footboard | The curves add to the overall length |
| Four-poster | A tall post at each corner | Check ceiling height if it has a canopy frame |
| Trundle, bunk, loft | Space-saving designs | Bunks are often limited to twin size |
| Adjustable base | Motorized base that raises the head and feet | Needs a compatible mattress; see our adjustable base guide |

Material: wood, metal or upholstered
- Wood: generally stable and less likely to wobble or squeak, but heavier. Check whether the listing says solid wood or includes plywood or fiberboard parts.
- Metal: durable, lighter and lower-maintenance, and often less expensive than solid wood.
- Upholstered: a softer headboard to lean on, but harder to clean and the fabric can wear.

Don’t skip the support
The Sleep Foundation points out that many mattress makers treat the warranty as void if the mattress is not on a proper frame or base, and that a frame raised off the floor on slats helps airflow and keeps the mattress away from dust. Check your mattress warranty for its slat-spacing or foundation rules before you choose a frame. Our box spring vs foundation vs slats guide explains which base suits which mattress.
