What Is a Smart Bed? Features, Who It Suits and What to Check Before You Buy

Short answer: a smart bed (or smart mattress) uses sensors and an app to track how you sleep and, on many models, to change the bed itself, adjusting firmness or temperature on each side, sometimes automatically during the night. It is worth considering if you want detailed sleep data, adjustable comfort for two very different sleepers, or help sleeping cooler. If you just want a comfortable mattress at a fair price, a good traditional mattress will do the job.
What is a smart bed?
There is no strict definition, because the category is new and changing fast. In general a smart mattress adds technology a traditional mattress doesn’t have: sleep-tracking sensors (usually near the head of the bed) and some way to personalize the bed, such as firmness you can adjust from an app or remote. Underneath, most are still a familiar mattress type. The two you will see most often are foam beds with added temperature features and airbeds, whose support core is one or more air chambers you can inflate or deflate to change firmness, often separately on each side.

Common smart bed features
| Feature | What it does | Who cares most |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep tracking | Estimates bedtime, wake-up time, disruptions and sleep position; the app usually gives a sleep score and tips | People who like data and want to spot patterns |
| Body and room monitoring | Some models track movement, heart rate, breathing and temperature, plus bedroom temperature, noise and light | Data-driven sleepers; findings can be worth reviewing with a doctor |
| Adjustable firmness | Change the feel from an app or remote, often per side | Couples with different preferences; people whose needs change |
| Temperature control | Cooling or warming of the sleep surface, sometimes per side | Hot sleepers, couples who disagree on temperature |
| Automatic adjustments | Changes firmness or temperature during the night based on sensor data | Anyone who wants the bed to do the work |
| Audio and smart-home links | Sleep sounds or white noise, Wi-Fi, voice-assistant and app connections | Smart-home fans |

Who a smart bed suits, and who should skip it
- Good fit: early adopters who enjoy new tech; couples whose firmness or temperature preferences differ a lot; hot sleepers who want active temperature control; people who want detailed sleep tracking; shoppers happy to pay more for features.
- Probably skip: anyone on a tight budget (smart beds generally cost more than most other mattress types); people who prefer a simple mattress with nothing to charge, connect or update; shoppers who want the biggest selection, since there are far fewer smart models than regular mattresses.
Not ready to go all in? Smaller steps can get you part of the way: a sensor cover that slips over your current mattress for tracking, a bed temperature system that pumps cooled or heated water or air under your sheets, a wearable or bedside sleep tracker, or an adjustable base under the mattress you already like.
What to check before you buy
- The features you actually want: make sure the one thing that drew you in (tracking, per-side firmness, cooling) is included and usable, not an add-on or a subscription you didn’t expect.
- The mattress itself: the technology doesn’t matter if the layers underneath are poor. Look at materials, pressure relief, edge support, motion isolation and how easy it is to move on the bed.
- Firmness range: side sleepers often prefer a little softer; couples should look for separate adjustment on each side. Our firmness guide explains the scale.
- Sleep trial: many online mattresses offer an in-home trial, often around 100 nights. Read the terms and put the end date in your calendar.
- Warranty: the electronics are often covered on different terms from the mattress, so read both parts of the fine print.
- Delivery and setup: some arrive boxed and you install the tech yourself; others offer white-glove setup, sometimes for an extra charge.

Our own tips (not from that source): check where the bed needs to plug in and whether a pump or control unit sits beside or under it; read the app’s privacy settings, since the bed collects health-like data; and ask what still works if the app or Wi-Fi goes down.
